In the afternoon of April 25, Xi Nanhua, a famous mathematician and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to give a lecture at the School of Mathematical Sciences of Jiangsu University “Master Teacher Lectures Hall” and the first Mathematical Culture Festival. The lecture was held in the lecture hall on the first floor of the library of Jiangsu University. Professor Yan Xiaohong, President of Jiangsu University and doctoral supervisor, presided over the lecture and introduced Academician Xi Nanhua, while Professor Zhang Zhitao, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences, presided over the questions and thanked Academician Xi for his wonderful report. More than 180 teachers and students attended, including Zhang Shibing, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Mathematical Sciences, and Wang Jun, Vice dean.
With the topic of "Understanding Mathematics", Mr. Xi explained how to understand mathematics through examples such as prime numbers, counting problems and Goldbach's Conjecture. From "how to master the way of thinking in mathematics", "what is fundamental to mathematics", "what kind of problems are good problems", "the meaning of the beauty of mathematics", etc. The students were inspired to think about the meaning of mathematics. Goldbach's Conjecture", "Riemann's Conjecture", "Hilbert's 23 mathematical problems" ...... are some of the shining terms in the history of mathematics that shine in Nanhua's presentation.
The content of Xi's wonderful report was in-depth, the language was simple and direct, and the examples were vivid and interesting, which stimulated the students' enthusiasm for learning mathematics and triggered further thinking and discussion among teachers and students.
Xi Nanhua , a famous mathematician, member and standing committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher and doctoral supervisor of the Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences mathematics and systems , Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Vice President of the Shanghai University of Science and Technology. He was awarded the second prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Chern Prize, and the first National Outstanding Youth Fund, etc. He served as the Vice President of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2014 to 2017, and the President of the Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences mathematics and systems from 2012 to 2022. He is mainly engaged in research in the field of algebraic groups and quantum groups. His research work includes proving Lusztig's conjecture on the fundamental ring of bilateral cavities for affine A-type Weyl groups. The conjecture of Deligne-Langlands on the affine Hecke algebra was determined as a sufficient condition for its validity. Proved that the properties of finite-dimensional representations of quantum groups at non-unit roots of characteristic p are similar to those of algebraic groups of characteristic 0; clearly and concretely implemented finite-dimensional integrable representations of quantum groups at unit roots; collaborated with Chari to construct monomial bases of quantum groups, computed certain canonical bases, and gave an exchange formula between root vectors. In collaboration with Lusztig, he discovered the canonical left cell cavity, and in collaboration with Tanisaki, he proved that an algebraic filtration and a geometric filtration of the affine A-type Hecke algebra are identical. The study of infinite dimensional abstract representations of algebraic groups was started.
